Q Paper Assignment: Sociology and Me- Explaining Yourself The purpose of this assignment is NOT to relate a chronology of your life's events, but to apply the concept of the sociological imagination to important influences in your own life history. You should use the definitions and discussions developed in class and found in the text to analyze key events, people, behaviors, decisions, and life choices from a sociological perspective. This means recognizing the extent to which others in important social structural roles, cultures, groups, and institutions have influenced your life. Also, the purpose of this assignment is not for you to recognize how "lucky" or "unlucky" you have been in your life- although this may be of interest or important to you. Rather the purpose is to begin developing skills that help you learn how to do an "objective" sociological analysis, despite the obvious bias we all have in trying to understand ourselves. 1) As a way of going about this task, it is useful to first to write an introduction telling the reader the purpose of your paper and the themes, ideas, or concepts you will emphasize in it. 2) Next, fully explain the concept of the sociological imagination- that means you should define and discuss all its parts, ideas and implications as suggested in class. Reference the text, cite page number, use a quote to help ensure accuracy and precision, e.g. (Ritzer, 2020: 25). 3) Show the meaning of the concept of the sociological imagination by applying other ideas/concepts you have selected as objectively as you can to the social context of your life's experience, e.g., culture -(Define the concept, and then explain its meaning in an example from your life) Refer to and cite text, (Ritzer, 2020: 25). 4)In doing this assignment, be sure to connect your own personal feelings, perceptions and understanding yourself, to the larger forces and societal influences which shape our lives. 5) Finally, having reflected on your life using the sociological perspective, you might suggest issues or insights that might help you make decisions or changes in the future.
